BROKERS WANTED: Small Wages, Long Hours, Highly-Competitive

In 1914 the following ad appeared in the London Times:

When I read this ad for the first time, it reminded me of my first year in boat sales:

Many months of doubt.

Months of fear.

Darkness.

And small wages.

Fortunately, I was able to endure those months of suffering after selling my first million dollar yacht.

A decade has passed since this hardship…

Yet as I reflect on my “hazardous journey,” I recall that the most difficult part of my journey was dealing with other brokers who didn’t have the same positive mindset as I had.

Let me explain:

I noticed how many brokers attempt to manipulate clients to work with them. For the bad broker, there is always a reason to push, sneak, or not respect your engagement.

I wonder: why is it so difficult for boat & yacht sales professionals to work in a positive environment? After all, we are all fighting for a limited number of customers and for a limited number of boats & yachts available.

Here’s what you must realize:

This industry is one of those industries where 10% are responsible for 90% of the sales. So you have 90% of the guys that are desperate because they cannot make a decent living out of it.

It’s time to change the game.

If you don’t have what it takes you won’t last.

If you can’t make a living honestly without stabbing another colleague broker in the back, maybe it’s a sign that this business is not for you.

Look: you can focus on beating others or you can focus on improving yourself.
