Truth: selling boats is one of the most difficult professions out there.
A survey conducted in 2010 by Accenture found that the second least trusted and liked professions in the US was sales (after politicians).
Not only are we perceived poorly by the public, but making matters worse, we’re trying to sell:
✖️ A product that only 1% of the population can afford
✖️ A product that is last on the list of things we need in life
✖️ With one of the longest buying cycles
✖️ And all of this in an ultra-competitive and price-driven market
Look, sales is tough, sales is competitive and sales is unfair. There is no silver medal in sales. You either you go for gold (first place, with the sale and the commission) or you just go home.
Now, have you ever wondered ? how much it would pay to be #1 in your market?
When you’re #1 in your market, you get EXPONENTIALLY more benefits than being 2nd.
According to the International Ice Cream Association, the Top 10 flavours of ice cream in order are vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, strawberry, Neapolitan, chocolate chip, french vanilla and cookies ‘n’ cream.
Vanilla (#1) got approximately 28% of sales and chocolate (#2) got approximately 8% of sales. The rest got 6% or less. In this instance, being #1 makes you 350% better off than being #2.
Let me give you another example. Have you ever heard of the “Law of the Winning Edge”❓
This law states that “a small difference in effort will often result in a huge difference in results.” Let’s take a horse race for example.
The first horse will be 0.01% faster than the second horse yet the first place horse will get 1000% more money ? than the second.
You have to aim to become first in your field because IT PAYS TO BE NUMBER ONE.
Now, let me share an important reminder with you.
You don’t win a race by how hard you paddle. You win a race by how fast your craft moves in the RIGHT DIRECTION. There’s no prize for the “MOST EFFORT”, just focus on the things that make a difference.
It goes without saying that 20% of the things you do brings 80% of the results. But if you apply this rule a second time, 4% of the things you do bring 94% of the results.
